We were recently contacted by the family of a young man who were interested in seeing and trying out a tricycle. His name is Christopher, he is a very happy cheerful young man, he is 25 years of age and he has Cerebral Palsy which affects his balance. He had tried cycling when he was younger, but never managed to find a bike, trike or scooter that he – or his family - were comfortable with. Christopher’s mum – Angela - had heard from an old friend that her boy had found this amazing new trike from a company called Theraplay.

Mum, Angela, looked into this and thought “this looks like a good trike for Chris!” She made a call about this the next day and arranged a date and time to meet one of Theraplay’s product advisors so that Christopher could try out some tricycle options. Christopher had already tried a specially adapted trike when he was younger which was powered with hand pedals, unfortunately, Christopher found this was too difficult – much to his disappointment. When Christopher tried the TRACER trike he found that he could easily pedal on his own and he was confident when balancing.

When talking to Christopher we found out that he loves motorbikes, especially high-powered Kawasaki models which come in a fabulous, luminous green colour. Chris wanted his own trike to be the same eye-catching colour and we made sure his trike would be the right colour and set a date for delivery.

When the tricycle was ready for delivery we called Angela and arranged a date for the handover appointment. Our cycle advisor showed Christopher all the features of his new trike and helped him get on and strapped in securely for his first test ride. With a small helping push to get rolling, Christopher was off! Pedalling away, by himself, and cycling around the square in front of the family home - completely un-assisted.

Christopher’s family later said that seeing him do this was “an overwhelmingly emotional experience”, Christopher was cycling by himself with his friends and all the neighbours watching. He was very happy and extremely pleased with himself. Christopher’s whole life has changed since getting his new green trike.

I would like to spread the word to everyone who has a special child or adult in their life. this has changed my boy’s life.

Angela informed us that Christopher now plays on his trike with all the other kids in the street. Although Chris has just had an operation on his neck – and is still recovering - all he wants to do is go out on his trike!

Christopher’s mum has had to go get him his own garage to store his trike in and he checks everything each morning to make sure it’s still there. The family know that come summer time, his local beach will be the place to go and explore.

Angela closes with “Please give Theraplay a go. There is something out there for every special child and adult. The trike means the world to Chris.”
